I crossed my fingers they\u00e2\u20ac\u2122d be \u00e2\u20ac\u0153decent enough\u00e2\u20ac\u009d and figured I could always buy something more appropriate if necessary.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"606\" data-end=\"806\">I traveled in Iran at the end of autumn. That&#8217;s basically it\u00c2\u00a0<br data-start=\"988\" data-end=\"991\" \/>Long-sleeved cotton or linen shirts work perfectly: roll up the sleeves when it\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s hot, look relatively classy, and blend in with the sharp-dressed locals. Iranian men care about their appearance, and you\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ll want to keep up.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3231\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3231\" style=\"width: 780px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/travelcake.site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/MEN.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-3231 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/travelcake.site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/MEN-780x520.jpg\" alt=\"Iran what to wear\" width=\"780\" height=\"520\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.travelcake.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/MEN-780x520.jpg 780w, https:\/\/www.travelcake.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/MEN-320x213.jpg 320w, https:\/\/www.travelcake.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/MEN-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.travelcake.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/MEN-990x660.jpg 990w, https:\/\/www.travelcake.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/MEN-585x390.jpg 585w, https:\/\/www.travelcake.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/MEN.jpg 1140w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 780px) 100vw, 780px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3231\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">when it comes to dressing culturally appropriate, men always have it easier<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h3><strong>WOMEN<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>This is where it gets a bit more complex.<\/p>\n<p><strong>HEADSCARF (hijab)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1278\" data-end=\"1734\">By law, women must cover their hair in public \u00e2\u20ac\u201d in the hotel lobby, in restaurants, basically everywhere except in private spaces like your room or a friend&#8217;s house.<br data-start=\"1467\" data-end=\"1470\" \/>There\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s no rule about color: bright, dark, neutral \u00e2\u20ac\u201d anything goes.<br data-start=\"1537\" data-end=\"1540\" \/>Most women opt for pastel or dark tones, often plain or with a subtle pattern.<br data-start=\"1618\" data-end=\"1621\" \/><strong data-start=\"1621\" data-end=\"1629\">Tip for a noob:<\/strong> Avoid silk scarves; they slip like crazy. Go for cotton-based scarves \u00e2\u20ac\u201d much more hijab-amateur-proof.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3237\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3237\" style=\"width: 780px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/travelcake.site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/HEADSCARF.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-3237 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/travelcake.site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/HEADSCARF-780x585.jpg\" alt=\"loosely wrapped headscarf. I quite enjoyed not having to brush my hair every day<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><em data-start=\"1736\" data-end=\"1743\">Note:<\/em> In the cities, you\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ll notice many Iranian women wear their headscarves far back, showing lots of hair \u00e2\u20ac\u201d a quiet form of resistance. As a visitor, you won\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t be judged as harshly, but I still recommend covering most of your hair, but if a few loose strands peek out, that will be just fine.<\/p>\n<p><strong>MANTEAU (Coat or Overcoat)<br \/>\n<\/strong><strong data-start=\"2015\" data-end=\"2045\">\u00c2\u00a0<\/strong><br data-start=\"2045\" data-end=\"2048\" \/>The manteau \u00e2\u20ac\u201d a lightweight coat that covers your clothing and hides your figure \u00e2\u20ac\u201d is your new best friend.<br data-start=\"2130\" data-end=\"2133\" \/>No need to panic-buy a manteau: a <strong data-start=\"2167\" data-end=\"2224\">trench coat, loose parka, oversized cardigan or cloak<\/strong> will do.<br data-start=\"2233\" data-end=\"2236\" \/>The key is to make sure it\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s <strong data-start=\"2265\" data-end=\"2307\">long enough to cover your hips and bum<\/strong>. Sort of.<\/em><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3228\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3228\" style=\"width: 496px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/travelcake.site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/MAXI.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-3228 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/travelcake.site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/MAXI-496x670.jpg\" alt=\"what to wear in Iran. How to dress in Iran\" width=\"496\" height=\"670\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3228\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Maxi skirt with a knee length cardigan on top.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>SHOES AND ACCESSORIES<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"2733\" data-end=\"2920\">Open-toed sandals are tolerated, but you might feel little &#8220;naked&#8221; wearing them. Flats or sneakers are a safer\u00e2\u20ac\u201dand more comfortable\u00e2\u20ac\u201d\u00c2\u00a0 bet.<br data-start=\"2859\" data-end=\"2862\" \/>If you travel in colder seasons, bring solid flat boots.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"2922\" data-end=\"3152\"><em data-start=\"2922\" data-end=\"2938\">Personal fail:<\/em> Because I had no other boots in my collection and refused to purchase a new pair solely for this trip -meet a woman who owns just 3 pairs of shoes- \u00c2\u00a0I ended up wearing heeled boots on cold days. And yep \u00e2\u20ac\u201d they stood out.<br data-start=\"3003\" data-end=\"3006\" \/>One guy told me it was the &#8220;rich girl&#8221; look of Tehran. Couldn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t have been more wrong about me, but point taken: better to leave the heels at home.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"3154\" data-end=\"3229\">Accessories? Minimal is best. I like adding some local bling along the way.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3233\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3233\" style=\"width: 447px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/travelcake.site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/SHOES.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-3233 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/travelcake.site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/SHOES-447x670.jpg\" alt=\"what to wear in Iran\" width=\"447\" height=\"670\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3233\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">rich girl heels and a backpack with Persian design, gifted by a local friend<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>CHADOR<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"3236\" data-end=\"3406\">A chador is a large piece of fabric that covers your entire body head to toe. The full-body chador is <strong data-start=\"3273\" data-end=\"3281\">only<\/strong> needed when visiting certain mosques. You\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ll be handed one if necessary, and local women will gladly help you figure it out.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3226\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3226\" style=\"width: 670px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/travelcake.site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/CHADOR.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-3226 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/travelcake.site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/CHADOR-670x447.jpg\" alt=\"CHADOR\" width=\"670\" height=\"447\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3226\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">I was handed this bedsheet look-a-like chador at the entrance of the mosque. Most women wear a more upscale, black chador.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>MAKE-UP<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In big cities, you\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ll see Iranian women rocking incredible make-up looks.<br data-start=\"3500\" data-end=\"3503\" \/>You <em data-start=\"3507\" data-end=\"3514\">could<\/em> join in, and show up at a fast food joint with an extreme cat eye. However, I recommend keeping it low-key.
