In fact, funerals are the &#8220;main attraction\u00e2\u20ac\u009d in the region. Visitors mostly come to learn about the <strong>Torajan culture in which death plays a central \u00e2\u20ac\u201d and very visible \u00e2\u20ac\u201d role.<\/strong> The Torajans are known for their elaborate multi-day funeral rituals. Luther, our guide, advised us to bring a gift: a few packs of cigarettes.<br data-start=\"997\" data-end=\"1000\" \/><strong data-start=\"1000\" data-end=\"1017\">\u00e2\u20ac\u0153Cigarettes?\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/strong> How ironic.<br \/>\nHe also told us we were <em>very<\/em>\u00c2\u00a0<em>lucky<\/em>; this was the funeral of a wealthy lady who had long served as village chief.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u00c2\u00a0&#8220;Lucky&#8221;? What a confusing use of words&#8230;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The family welcomed us warmly and insisted we sit with them. Tea and biscuits were served. We were encouraged to chat about our home countries \u00e2\u20ac\u201d all while surrounded by grieving relatives and ceremonial chants. It was surreal. The Western taboo around death was completely absent here<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1488\" data-end=\"1607\">The Torajans seemed strangely relaxed \u00e2\u20ac\u201d possibly because, in their culture, death doesn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t come with immediate finality.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1609\" data-end=\"1934\">When someone dies, they aren\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t buried right away. Instead, the family begins preparing, sometimes for <em data-start=\"1711\" data-end=\"1719\">months<\/em> or even <em data-start=\"1728\" data-end=\"1735\">years<\/em>, to afford the grand funeral rites. In the meantime, the deceased is embalmed, wrapped in cloth, and kept at home \u00e2\u20ac\u201d in the traditional <strong data-start=\"1871\" data-end=\"1884\">tongkonan<\/strong> house \u00e2\u20ac\u201d living under the same roof as the family.<\/p>\n<p>The person isn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t considered dead, but merely <strong data-start=\"1981\" data-end=\"2000\">\u00e2\u20ac\u0153incurably ill\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/strong> until the burial rites are complete. Family members continue to bring food, water, and yes \u00e2\u20ac\u201d cigarettes \u00e2\u20ac\u201d to the body daily. One leads his life in order to have the biggest, most elaborate funeral possible. The 100 or more guests always bring a gift: cigarettes, rice, a pig or a buffalo according to their financial ability. The funeral lasts 11 days and consists of serval rites.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1361\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1361\" style=\"width: 780px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a affair.<\/strong>\u00c2\u00a0The deceased&#8217;s soul is believed to travel to the afterlife on a buffalo or horse. How do you bring livestock to your afterlife? By sacrificing it, of course.\u00c2\u00a0Therefore, the more buffalo offered, the more reassured the family will be that their loved ones will reach his or her final destination safely. Apart from buffaloes, the dead will also need to bring along their most valuable possessions, including the rest of their livestock. They are hung up on the deceased tongkonan and represent the family&#8217;s wealth. Not under the ground, but in a cave or in a hole carved in a cliff. Family members craft a &#8220;tau-tau&#8221;; what could be compared to an avatar, representing the deceased. <strong>His\/her spirit is believed to inhabit the tau-tau.<\/strong> They are placed on a balcony in front of the graves. Infants are embalmed and placed in sitting position inside sepcifically designated <strong data-start=\"3593\" data-end=\"3602\">trees<\/strong>. These special trees ooze a white sap when cut \u00e2\u20ac\u201d symbolizing <strong data-start=\"3664\" data-end=\"3681\">mother\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s milk<\/strong>. The tree grows around the baby, embracing and absorbing it. These trees are sacred, and normally off-limits to outsiders \u00e2\u20ac\u201d but we were allowed to visit an old one no longer in use.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1358\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1358\" style=\"width: 447px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/travelcake.site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/BABY.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1358 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/travelcake.site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/BABY-447x670.jpg\" alt=\"baby graves, Sulawesi\" width=\"447\" height=\"670\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1358\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">baby graves<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Attending a funeral is weirdly enough, a top attraction in Tana Toraja. I found it such an incredible enrichment to experience how this culture engages with death: not with fear but with reverence, community and celebration. Watching the slaughtering was bit harsh, but it isn&#8217;t a show put on for tourists, this is Torajan reality\u00c2\u00a0\u00e2\u20ac\u201d it\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s real. It\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s raw. It\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Torajan reality.<br data-start=\"4237\" data-end=\"4240\" \/>The people are so friendly and open, I quickly felt at ease.<\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8216;Funeral season&#8217; is in July and August<\/strong>, but there are funerals throughout the year. Tourists are welcome to attend them and are treated as honoured guests. Make sure you bring a gift to the family. There isn&#8217;t really a dress code, but obviously you should dress modestly and respectfully. If you have a black t-shirt, wear it; you&#8217;ll fit right in.
