Now imagine that bash lasting for days, taking place outdoors under a blazing sun, and involving obscene amounts of water.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"427\" data-end=\"635\">Welcome to <strong data-start=\"438\" data-end=\"450\">Thingyan<\/strong> \u00e2\u20ac\u201d Myanmar\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s water festival, held around mid-April to ring in the Burmese New Year. It&#8217;s the country\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s biggest and most important holiday, and it&#8217;s absolutely bonkers (in the best way). <span style=\"color: #333333;\">Similar waterfestivals are celebrated in the neighbouring buddhist countries Thailand, Laos (Songkran) and Cambodia (Chaul Chnam Thmey).<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"637\" data-end=\"881\">We were lucky enough to be in Myanmar just in time. Locals insisted Yangon was the place to be. So, a few days before the madness kicked off, we headed to the capital \u00e2\u20ac\u201d because once Thingyan starts, public transport basically stops.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"883\" data-end=\"959\">At the time, I thought: <em data-start=\"907\" data-end=\"941\">\u00e2\u20ac\u0153A water festival? Sounds cute.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/em><br data-start=\"941\" data-end=\"944\" \/>I was so wrong.<\/p>\n<p>It began in the taxi. I sat, stunned and dripping, as the taxi driver howled with laughter.<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u0153Happy happy?\u00e2\u20ac\u009d he asked, eyes twinkling.<br data-start=\"1366\" data-end=\"1369\" \/>\u00e2\u20ac\u0153Yeah\u00e2\u20ac\u00a6 happy,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d I sputtered.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1398\" data-end=\"1432\">And just like that, we were in it.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1284\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1284\" style=\"width: 780px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/travelcake.site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/FOR.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1284 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/travelcake.site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/FOR-780x585.jpg\" alt=\"ready for Thingyan, Myanmar\" width=\"780\" height=\"585\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.travelcake.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/FOR-780x585.jpg 780w, https:\/\/www.travelcake.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/FOR-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.travelcake.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/FOR-990x743.jpg 990w, https:\/\/www.travelcake.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/FOR-585x439.jpg 585w, https:\/\/www.travelcake.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/FOR.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 780px) 100vw, 780px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1284\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">ready for Thingyan<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1439\" data-end=\"1687\"><strong data-start=\"1439\" data-end=\"1472\">So, what exactly is Thingyan?<\/strong><br data-start=\"1472\" data-end=\"1475\" \/>It\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s a multi-day water fight with soul. People splash water on each other to wash away sins, bad luck, and evil deeds from the past year. The symbolism is beautiful \u00e2\u20ac\u201d but in practice, it\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s complete, joyous chaos.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1689\" data-end=\"1922\">You cannot walk one block dry. Not possible. Water is <em data-start=\"1743\" data-end=\"1755\">everywhere<\/em>. And while the main square with its traditional dance shows and hose stations is lovely, the real party \u00e2\u20ac\u201d the pure, pulsing heart of Thingyan \u00e2\u20ac\u201d is <strong data-start=\"1903\" data-end=\"1921\">Kandawgyi Lake<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1924\" data-end=\"2229\">That\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s where Yangon\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s youth gathers. It&#8217;s loud, it\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s wild, it\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s a full-on music festival meets water park. Temporary \u00e2\u20ac\u0153spraying stations\u00e2\u20ac\u009d line the streets, doubling as dance stages. Fire hoses, even. At one point I got sprayed with what I <em data-start=\"2341\" data-end=\"2348\">swear<\/em> was a power washer. When you\u00e2\u20ac\u2122re not standing under what I would describe as the world&#8217;s largest shower, someone empties their container over you and simultaneously wishes you a \u00e2\u20ac\u02dcHappy New Year\u00e2\u20ac\u2122.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\">But it\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s for a good cause: <strong>the<\/strong>\u00c2\u00a0<strong>festival is held to wash away evil deeds, bad luck and sins from the past year before entering the new.<\/strong>\u00c2\u00a0Many of the adolescents take advantage of the more or less \u00e2\u20ac\u02dcfree pass\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 to commit some last minute &#8220;sins&#8221;. The DJ played some good beats and we mingled with the teenagers, hosing down passers-by. Dance, play, shout \u00e2\u20ac\u0153happy happy!\u00e2\u20ac\u009d until your voice cracks. Go just as nuts as they do!<br \/>\nIf you stay on the sidelines, you\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ll miss the magic. Even inside a train or bus, someone <em data-start=\"3879\" data-end=\"3885\">will<\/em> find a way to hose you.<\/p>\n<p><strong data-start=\"3914\" data-end=\"3928\">Plan ahead<\/strong>. Transport grinds to a halt during the festival, so get where you need to be <em data-start=\"4006\" data-end=\"4014\">before<\/em> the first splash.<\/p>\n<p><strong data-start=\"4037\" data-end=\"4057\">Don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t resist it.<\/strong> Resistance is not only futile \u00e2\u20ac\u201d it\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s also kind of rude.
