<\/a>It would take a short novel to share the whole story \u00e2\u20ac\u201d so I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ll stick to the essentials.<\/p>\n
Chaos from Day One<\/strong> The silver lining? After a week of frustration, we finally got our documents in order and left the tourist Shangri-La behind to dive into the \u00e2\u20ac\u0153real\u00e2\u20ac\u009d India.<\/p>\n With our backpacks strapped to the bike, we rode through palm-fringed Kerala and paused for a few days to drift along the backwaters on a houseboat.<\/p>\n We continued our journey by motorcyle and witnessed how the landscapes shifted constantly \u00e2\u20ac\u201d lush, majestic, chaotic, or sometimes just plain dull.<\/p>\n We rode all day, taking frequent breaks.<\/p>\n When the sun began to set, we\u00e2\u20ac\u2122d start looking for a place to stay. If we were lucky, we found a charming guesthouse with a view. More often, we ended up in crumbling rooms full of cockroaches, mysterious stains, rat droppings, broken fans in 40\u00c2\u00b0C heat, or \u00e2\u20ac\u201d worst of all \u00e2\u20ac\u201d hotel staff showing up unannounced in our room at night with the excuse that they \u00e2\u20ac\u0153needed something\u00e2\u20ac\u009d from our room. The Bullet tagged along with us where ever we went, giving us the freedom to stop when and where we wanted.<\/p>\n It also broke down a lot<\/strong>. If we were near a town, we\u00e2\u20ac\u2122d find a mechanic. If not, we\u00e2\u20ac\u2122d fix it ourselves \u00e2\u20ac\u201d with tape and rope<\/strong>. Yep, that works sometimes.<\/p>\n Surprisingly, people would often spontaneously jump in to help, trying everything to get The Bullet back on the road.<\/p>\n Traffic near cities was absolute madness<\/strong>. You never know what you’ll encounter on the road. Anything goes \u00e2\u20ac\u201d cows, trucks, rickshaws, elephants, kids…<\/p>\n We met some fascinating characters along the way.<\/p>\n We ate where the locals ate.<\/p>\n We tried to understand the essence of India. We were far off the tourist trail, deep in small-town life. Still, we knew we\u00e2\u20ac\u2122d never truly make sense of how things work in this country\u00e2\u20ac\u201d not fully. We were, and always would be, outsiders<\/strong>. My leg of the journey ended in Delhi, after riding through Kerala, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Gujarat<\/strong>, and Rajasthan<\/strong>. Douglas continued solo through the Himalayas, all the way to Manali<\/strong>.<\/p>\n Countless insane things happened during those three months. As I mentioned earlier, it would take a novel to tell the full story.\u00c2\u00a0 I would definitely rank this trip under the category “hardcore travel”.<\/strong><\/p>\n Tips for motorcycling through India:<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n 1. Don’t.<\/strong> It’s dangerous. But if you really really must…<\/p>\n 2. Travel India without a motorcycle first.<\/strong>Learn the ropes \u00e2\u20ac\u201d how things work (or don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t), how to navigate the chaos \u00e2\u20ac\u201d before adding a bike to the mix. Only when you find that you can handle the Indian chaos, should you start to consider driving the motorcycle. <\/strong><\/p>\n 3. Upgrade your motorcycle’s horn.<\/strong>\u00c2\u00a0Make sure it’s loud enough to overpower the other horns. On Indian roads, it’s survival of the loudest.<\/strong><\/p>\n 4. Pack light<\/strong>, very light. You’ll have such a smoother and more comfortable ride with a light backseat. You may have noticed I’m wearing the same outfits in almost all of the pictures in this post.\u00c2\u00a0Don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t forget: tape and rope<\/strong> are your best friends.<\/p>\n 5. Avoid cities and crowds<\/strong>. They’re complete mayhem.<\/p>\n 6. If you are pressed with time, head to North India.<\/strong> The mountainous area north of New Delhi is far more laid back to drive through.<\/p>\n 7. Finally and most importantly: Go with the flow.<\/strong> You can’t control most of what happens on Indian roads. \nBy the time I arrived, Douglas and his travel mate had already bought their bikes, survived insane traffic, suffered through tropical illnesses, and narrowly escaped death a few<\/em> times.
Worst of all, they\u00e2\u20ac\u2122d just been robbed of thousands of dollars\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 worth of filming gear and the footage they had shot so far. That\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s how we got acquainted with Indian police stations and red tape. I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ve blacked out most of the details \u00e2\u20ac\u201d it really was<\/em> that bad.<\/p>\n
The robbery happened in Varkala<\/strong>, a beachside backpacker haven perched on a cliff, dotted with bars, restaurants, and market stalls. While we spent our days navigating endless paperwork, our nights were filled with banana pancakes, cold beers, spontaneous campfire singalongs, and skinny-dipping under the full moon with new Scandinavian friends.

But to us, that<\/em> was the beauty of traveling in India.<\/p>\n<\/a><\/a>
This wasn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t a relaxing trip. It was challenging, dangerous, frustrating<\/strong>, and also utterly unforgettable<\/strong>.<\/p>\n
